Mental Health Awareness at Work

Work related stress is a very real problem for organisations; turnover of staff and sickness rates cost UK businesses approximately £5 billion every year.

The statistics

According to the HSE, it’s estimated that over 11 million days are lost at work every year because of stress at work.

Research conducted by MIND, one of the UK’s largest mental health charities, indicated that one in four employees have considered leaving their job due to stress, with one in five of these people stating they felt they couldn’t tell their manager if they felt overly stressed.

MIND’s research also showed that one in six workers are experiencing some sort of depression, stress or anxiety and that managers feel ill-equipped to deal with this.

Mental health is as important as physical health

It is widely recognised that keeping your workforce safe physically is vital and organisations are now seeing the importance of this being applied to mental health too.

Claire Robinson, Expedient’s Operations Manager explains;

“We all accept that it’s important to look after our physical health in general. The majority of organisations take safety extremely seriously, implementing standards such as ISO 45001 and working under HSE guidelines to protect their employees from any injuries while at work.”

Claire continues;

“We’re now seeing forward thinking organisations implementing training and management systems to ensure that they are looking after the mental health of their employees, with various wellbeing programs in place.

Alongside this the HSE have introduced a set of guidelines in 2018 under their Management Standards, all demonstrating the importance of mental health at work.”

Reducing the impact of stress on your employees

HSE guidelines recognise that helping team leaders and managers to be able to identify issues early on is absolute key.

Having the structure, skills and knowledge in place will enable early intervention before an issue can become worse, impacting the employee, their immediate team and the wider organisation.
