Changes to CITB health, safety and environment test

The CSCS card (Construction Skills Certificate Scheme) provides an easy way to prove that a person has the correct training in order for them to carry out their job on a construction site.

In order to be awarded the card, applicants need to demonstrate that they have achieved an SQV or NVQ in a construction related qualification as well as passing the CITB Health, safety and environment test.

Currently if an applicant has achieved an SQV or NVQ within the last 2 years they are exempt from having to sit the CITB Health, safety and environment test.

All change from 2nd September 2019

From the 2nd September this exemption will no longer be in place.

All applicants of the CSCS card will have to sit the CITB Health, safety and environment test.

Gordon Jenkins, Director of Operations of CSCS explains;

“CSCS, together with our 35 partner card schemes, are bound by the requirements of the Industrial Strategy of Construction.

The Industrial Strategy is overseen by The Construction Leadership Council (CLC) who, in 2015, announced that cards displaying the CSCS logo should only issue skilled cards to applicants who hold nationally recognised construction construction qualifications and have passed a separate health and safety element.”

What does this mean to current CSCS holders who obtained theirs using the exemption?

Your card will still be valid until the expiry date on the card.

When it comes to renewing your card, you will need to sit and pass the CITB Health, safety and environment test.
