DEA stands for Domestic Energy Assessor. A DEA is responsible for Assessing the Energy Consumption and Environmental Impact rating, within an existing Domestic Property. They produce a legal document called an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate). A DEA can only produce an EPC for an existing property, in other words, they would not be qualified to assess a brand new domestic property, that would require an OCDEA (On Construction Domestic Energy Assessor).
An EPC is a legal requirement for any property which is rented or sold in the UK (with a few exceptions) and it is valid for a period of 10 years from the date of completion.
The process of Energy Assessment involves the DEA visiting the property requiring assessment and conducting a simple, non-invasive inspection of the dwelling. In specific, this requires them to evidence existing levels of insulation to the floor walls and roof of a property and installed building services (such as heating, lighting, and any renewable technologies etc).

This qualification is suitable for anyone wanting to advance their career in building fabric, understanding the different elements of a property and how to technically model a property to generate an EPC.
Due to COVID, we saw a huge loss of jobs and redundancies in lots of different industries, so applicants from a variety of different sectors were looking for a change in career, and the Energy (and retrofit) subjects are consistently on the increase.
DEA is for anyone who wants to start a career in Energy Assessment, has an interest in understanding the technical monitoring of current energy performance, wants a change of career in a sustainable industry, or wants to achieve the Retrofit Assessor qualification.
The Retrofit Assessor qualification is the main reason why most people are applying for this qualification now.
The course is designed to provide end to end support, guidance, and mentorship, so that candidates complete and qualify within the 4 week period. We have dedicated Assessors and an Internal Verifier who are dedicated to each student for the duration of the course. Once all portfolio tasks have been completed, signed off and internally verified, we can apply for the Certificate directly from the Awarding Body ABBE, as we have DCS (Direct Claims Status) for this qualification.
